About Notwestminster 2023
Do you want a citizen friendly democracy, where our organisations and institutions put their trust in citizens? Do you want to help others be listened to and actively involved? Notwestminster is about finding the people, ideas and energy we need, so that we can grow our trust in each other and share our aspirations about what our everyday democracy can be. Together we find practical ways of working together to improve our lives and local places.
If you’re up for the challenge of renewing our democracy, please join us for a day of workshops, quick-fire talks, conversations and inspiration in Huddersfield. Notwestminster is a free event and everyone is welcome to take part. All we ask is that you are interested in making our local democracy better, and willing to do something to make it happen.
In Democracy We Trust
Notwestminster is a community of amazing people who give their time and attention to improving our local democracy in places across the UK. We’re excited to be getting back together in Huddersfield and welcoming new participants for the eighth edition of our Notwestminster annual event. We’d love for you to be part of it.
We are citizens by nature. When we talk about local democracy, we mean the democracy that happens where we are, in our neighbourhoods and the places that we know. It’s here that we want everyone to be able to have a voice, make decisions and take action. One of the ways our participants have said that we can make more of this happen is for organisations to let go more and learn how to trust citizens. This might mean challenging who the ‘experts’ are, creating the conditions for citizens to lead, and finding new ways of listening to each other.
Sometimes, the best tool for conversation is a blank sheet of paper. What if you could write your own rules, or set your own agenda? How would you take this out into the world and connect with others to make it happen? Lots of people feel that we need to do things differently to restore trust in our democracy, but we don’t always see that we can make it happen.
Come to Notwestminster and be inspired to do things differently. Share your ideas and experiences, listen to others, learn together, and be part of finding local solutions to issues for our everyday democracy. Bring your questions, share your aspirations and hear things that will spark your imagination.
Notwestminster is a welcoming place, which only exists because of the generosity of our participants. You’ll find this a friendly day, where we make room for each other’s ideas and experiences, look out for each other and inspire each other to take action. Come and meet some amazing people who are at the heart of efforts to improve our democracy, for everyone.
If you want our everyday democracy to be different, and if you’re up for the challenge of doing something to help make it happen, please join us at Notwestminster.
Democracy doesn’t begin and end with government – it starts with us.
We trust in our local democracy, because we trust in each other.
And the job of government is to trust citizens.
